Aren't Tiles Cold?
Tiles are no colder than vinyl. In fact they can be warmer -especially if underfloor heating is installed which usually can not be done with vinyl. Even without underfloor heating, since Roman times tiles have been used as a passive solar heater - storing their warmth from the sun and then, as the air cools, releasing their stored warmth.
Aren't Tiles Expensive?
Tiles are no more expensive than other quality floor coverings and are often cheaper than some other types of flooring. Whatever the cost tiles last much longer than any other type of floor covering so often work out cheaper even where the initial cost is higher.
What happens if I break a tile?
It is much more difficult to damage a tile than to damage any other type of floor covering due to the fact that a tile is very much harder and stronger than any other type of floor covering.
When laying tiles it is recommended that you keep a few spare to replace any which may be damaged in the future. Even if the tile you lay is available in a few years time the batch is bound to be different making it impossible to match the original tile. Unlike other floor coverings, individual tiles can be replaced without the need to replace the whole floor.
Aren't Tiles Slippery?
Tile surfaces vary greatly from high gloss to full anti-slip. Nevertheless that fact that a particular tile is glossy does not necessarily mean it is slippery. Bright Tiles has an excellent range of non-slippery glossy tiles.
It is important to weigh up the relative merits of less slippery with ease of cleaning. A full anti-slip tile is so coarse that it can only be hosed down and therefore is suitable only for outdoors. There are many gradations between full anti-slip and full gloss and the imporatant thing is to achieve a compromise between ease of cleaning and slipperiness which you feel comfortable with.
How easy are Tiles to keep clean?
Apart from anti-slip tiles most tiles are very easy to clean (see our Tile Tips section). Unlike other types of floor and wall coverings tiles can usually just be swept clean (for floor tiles) or wiped down for wall tiles.
